Therapy Services

Each of us is the sum of our experiences in life. The secret is discovering how those experiences interrelate. I offer professional counselling in the areas described below.

children and teens

" a person is a person not matter how small"

Dr. Suess            Children can experience difficult emotions and distress just as adolescents and adults.  These difficulties may be manifested  from autism spectrum, attention abilities, family conflict, social skills, and emotional regulation. I work with families to support children in learning how to identify causes of their distress, learn and practice skills in asking for help and expressing emotions to increase coping skills and developing strategies to manage thier emotions.

Play therapy is provided for younger children to allow for the child to communitcate through the act of play.  Pretend play allows children to take on the control they don't often experiene in their young lives. Play therapy is reparative in that it leaves room for youngsters to work through difficult emotions, to feel heard and be seen in a safe environment,

Adolescents

"It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are."

                                                       E.E. Cumming

Teens may find their way into therapy when they start to not feel comfortable in their own skin and want a place to explore their thoughts and feelings. Parents, family memebers and teachers often become aware of mood and/behavior changes and may encourage their teen to participate in counseling.  These changes can come from life situations, underlying mental health concerns and even at times physical manifestations. Some of the concerns that teens may be facing include friendships/relationships, sexual/gender identity, family conflict, academic pressure/test anxiety, school transitions, self harm and social anxiety.  I work with both teen and parent to identify issues and to develop strategies for healthier coping skills and relief of emotional distress.

The 2o'somethings

"A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step"

                                                                          Lao Tzu

As young people make the transition from teen to young adulthood they can face unique challenges. Stepping into adulthood often involves defining who you are as an individual as well as a worker.  There are expectations and pressures for young adults to be more independent and this is not always an easy task, and some are not develpmentally ready to do so. The "Covid Years" had a a huge impact on the developmental stage of those in their early 20s and blocked some of these young adults abilities to  transition to independence.   Re-define family relationships and friendships can be overwhelming and painful as they begin to balance looking for employment, and working, and maintaining connections within those individuals who are significant to them.  I work closely with young adults to help them navigate life as they come into their own sense of well-being. Some issues that young adults can bump into is anxiety and depression, discovering personal goals and values, career choices, and work expectations, relationship goals and expectations, self-confidence and esteem, gender identity/sexuality.
